Tell Lidl not to sell chlorinated chicken or hormone injected beef

Email subject: Please don't sell chlorinated chicken, hormone injected beef or food with lower standards

Email Text: The chairman of Greener UK, a coalition of 13 major environmental organisations, including The National Trust and the WWF, has warned that government proposals of setting a high tariff on hormone-fed beef or chlorinated chicken “is no substitute for simply barring them as unfit for British consumers.”

The former British ambassador to the US warned a Brexit trade deal with America that allowed the cheap imports of meat would put many of our farmers and poultry producers “under severe threat.”

You are over seven times more likely to get food poisoning in the US than the UK, according to data from the UK’s Food Standards Agency and the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and at least one of the hormones routinely used in US beef production has been judged to be a significant cancer risk by the EU.

Unlike in the EU, there are no laws in the US on how many chickens can be crammed into a certain area. It’s reasons like this why chickens in America are dosed with 3 times as much antibiotics compared with those in the UK, which is contributing to the rise of antibiotic resistance.

Over 1 million people have signed the National Farmers’ Union’s petition calling for the government to put into law rules that prevent food being imported to the UK which is produced in ways that would be illegal here.

And according to a recent survey, 95% of consumers said it is important for the UK to maintain existing food standards.

Waitrose, the Co-op, Aldi, Marks & Spencer, Sainsbury’s, Morrisons, Tesco, Asda & now Iceland have all said they won't sell chlorinated chicken or hormone injected beef even if the UK agrees a trade deal with the US which allows them to be imported. I ask that you please join them.

Best regards
